About Martingale Collars

Martingale collars were originally designed for dog breeds with narrow heads like greyhounds; who typically can slip out of a regular flat buckle collar. Aside from narrow head dog breeds, they also work great for many others too!

Martingale collars have 1 large loop and 1 small loop. The large loop is the “regular collar portion” that sits around most of the neck. The small loop covers the remaining perimeter of the neck and holds the D ring that your leash attaches to. The small loop is designed to tighten the collar any time your dog pulls. This ensures that your dog remains securely in a collar, and it also can help correct your dog’s pulling behaviors during leash use.

  • welded D ring and adjusters
  • your color choice of metal hardware (gold, silver, rose gold, matte black)
  • 100% cotton exterior, strong nylon webbing interior

  • box stitching at all pressure points

Measure the widest part of your pup’s head and ears, to ensure you can fit the collar on over their head. Then measure the neck where their collar sits. I recommend taking a measurement close to the neck and another measurement with a couple fingers space included inside. Select the size range that your measurements best fit into

If you normally choose a thinner collar width for your flat buckle collars; it may not be available as a martingale size. Martingale collars need to be wide enough so that when your dog pulls, the pressure applied to the neck is more comfortable and evenly distributed.

We carry 2 kinds of martingale collars; 1 with a buckle and 1 without. Both styles are designed to serve the same purpose, but here are pros and cons between each!

NOT suitable for dogs with these Health Conditions: I do not recommend ever using a martingale collar for dog breeds that are brachycephalic or for any dog who has a collapsed trachea. Ultimately, a harness will be most comfortable and safe for dogs with those conditions.

Safety: Before walking your pup, we recommend first testing that the collar is adjusted tight enough by pulling on the D ring of the small loop with a leash/your finger to ensure that the collar can’t slip over the entire head.

If your dog’s head is smaller than their neck, the 2 metal pieces on each side of the small loop should not fully touch. If your dog’s head is larger than their neck, this isn’t necessary as long as the collar is still adjusted tight enough.

We do not recommend leaving on martingale collars for extended periods of time when your pup is home since the loop can get caught on something in your home and pose a safety hazard.

Wear and Tear: It is your responsibility to determine if our accessories are suitable for your specific pet. I am unable to refund or replace your collar if it accumulates any wear and tear from but not limited to; your dog chewing/scratching.

While our collars are made as high quality as possible, no collar is indestructible and we recommend regularly checking for wear and tear and replacing your collar when necessary.

Washing Instructions: I only recommend washing by hand, as the washing machine may ruin your collar and its’ hardware! Lay flat to dry. You can gently repress your collar with an iron on low/medium heat if desired (polyester setting recommended). Avoid ironing any hardware.

Metal Hardware will likely accumulate cosmetic flaws and/or chipping over time from things like your dog’s activity and environment. This is expected so I am unable to refund or replace items that accumulate cosmetic wear and tear.
